Dantewada market, epicentre of a food revolution
EMPIRE DIARIES ON ROAD
April 21, 2024: A silent revolution is taking place in Dantewada town in Bastar region of Chhattisgarh. It’s a revolution about the food we eat. A revolution against chemical farming. At the heart of this movement is this marketplace in Dantewada.
Once every week, farmers from various parts of Chhattisgarh come to this market. They sell crops, veggies, and fruits that are all organically grown. There is no sign of chemical pesticides and fertilisers in what is bought and sold here.
Villagers also sell dried fish and rice beer at this weekly market. The dried fish comes from the catch from two rivers flowing through Dantewada town – Shankhini and Dankini. Rice beer is a local beverage. It is made by fermenting rice. It is a popular drink in Chhattisgarh among women and men who go to the market for routine shopping.
The farmers in this marketplace have a strong message for the people of India. The message is loud and clear. It is possible to have a world where you don’t need artificial pesticides and fertilisers. It is possible to grow, sell, and consume all our food organically. All the time. Dantewada’s organic revolution has survived the test of time.
It’s time the rest of India joins the food movement. Watch this ground report and share it.
