Passport rankings: The hidden agenda
January 29, 2024: You must have seen in the news recently that India now sits on No. 80 in the Global Passport Rankings. France, Germany and four other countries have the most powerful passports in the world. The latest passport rankings, featuring the most powerful to least powerful passports, is compiled by UK-based Henley Index, a London-based watchdog.
If you look at it casually, you will think: what’s wrong in knowing which countries have important passports as per the Global Passport Rankings? The Henley Index says Indian passport holders can travel to 62 countries without needing any visa.
Six countries jointly have the strongest passports – France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain. Their citizens can walk into 194 countries visa-free.
The question is, is it really a matter of pride to curate a list of powerful and powerless passports? There’s clearly hypocrisy behind the idea of compiling something like annual passport rankings. The Global Passport Rankings clearly promote institutionalised classism, racism, and divisionism.
Who decides you are a second-class citizen on this planet? What’s in it for India and dozens of economically targeted countries?
