Bengal famine of 1943 — A story of three lockdowns
December 27, 2023: This year marked 80 years of the Bengal famine of 1943. It was a manufactured famine, not a natural one. 30 lakh people starved to death over a two-year period. It was a genocide engineered by British invaders using a cunning policy of lockdowns.
Yes, lockdowns. Like the lockdowns we saw in 2020. Historians won’t tell you this, that British occupiers used lockdowns to trigger the Bengal famine of 1943. Intellectual people in modern-day Bengal, Odisha, Bangladesh love to express anger over the Holocaust in Europe. But most of them foolishly forget Bengal’s own Holocaust.
In this episode of Declassified, we looked at how the British Empire imposed three deadly lockdowns to commit the genocide, commonly labelled Bengal famine of 1943. We discussed the dirty tactics of denial policy and biopolitics. We recalled Winston Churchill’s racist remarks about dying Indians. And we looked at modern-day Bengalis’ fascination for everything British despite knowing the truth about the Bengal famine of 1943.
Holocaust vs Bengal famine of 1943
How many people did the Holocaust kill from 1941 to 1945? About 60 lakh Jews were slaughtered across Europe. Compared to that, the 1943 Bengal famine killed 30 lakh people over a much smaller area. The 60-lakh Holocaust deaths covered entire Europe. In contrast, the 30-lakh deaths during the Bengal famine of 1943 covered the two Bengals and Odisha. So, Bengal’s Holocaust was far more concentrated than the one in Europe.
Eighty years on, people around the world and even Bengali people themselves have pushed the Bengal famine of 1943 into the background. Nobody officially calls it a genocide, even though it was one. Let’s turn the clock back. Let’s look at how the British culprits used three back-to-back lockdowns to carry out mass murders in cold blood.
