On 7th June, 2021, the Supreme Court gave an order saying Khori Gaon’s residents must be evicted because they encroached on Aravalli forest land.

The residents of this area are mostly migrants from Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bengal. They say they have been living here for 35-40 years. They bought land from local land dealers and paid the police before building their little houses.

They cast votes during elections. MPs and MLAs visit them, asking for votes during poll campaigns. ‘Where was the government, court and police when we were settling in for these 40 years,’ one of the residents questions.

After the court’s eviction order, people started protesting, seeking rehabilitation. While a case is still going on regarding their rehabilitation, people there say police are routinely picking up residents who are raising their voice.
