Sunderlal Bahuguna Foresaw Climate Change Decades Before It Became A Global Outcry

He spent his entire life protecting the Himalayas from so-called development

Sunderlal Bahuguna pioneered India’s protest against deforestation.

He spoke out on the need to save nature and fought to save the Himalayas from corporate encroachment when terms like ‘climate change’ and ‘eco-activism’ didn’t even exist.

Bahuguna understood the threat of climate change long, long before the global outcry began.

Back in the 70s and 80s, he had led the Chipko Movement in what is now Uttarakhand, and marched 5,000km to force Indira Gandhi’s government to ban deforestation.

The environmentalist, who fought all his life to protect nature from so-called ‘development’, succumb to Covid-19 on May 21, 2021 at the age of 94.

Through this tribute, Empire Diaries remembers the significance of his teachings that is more relevant today than ever before.
