New Delhi, February 25, 2021: In a shocking revelation, it has emerged that vaccine giant Pfizer is allegedly abusing the governments of Latin American countries while striking deals for the supply of its coronavirus vaccines.
Pfizer has allegedly asked some countries to pledge assets such as military bases and embassy buildings with the pharma company as guarantee to cover for compensation or the cost of legal cases, in case they arise.
A report published by the UK-based Bureau of Investigative Journalists on its website claims that in its dealings with the governments of Argentina and Brazil, Pfizer has demanded that their vital sovereign assets should be put up as collateral to cover any legal costs, if they arise.
“One official who was present in the unnamed country’s negotiations described Pfizer’s demands as ‘high-level bullying’ and said the government felt like it was being ‘held to ransom’ in order to access life-saving vaccines,” the report reveals.
Going by the findings, it’s an act of sheer blackmail on the part of the vaccine maker. Can it get more atrocious than this?
At a time when the whole world has been struggling to combat the coronavirus pandemic for over a year now, Pfizer is literally abusing its clients – the countries that are dependent on the vaccine company to inoculate their populations against the killer disease.
Pfizer told the Bureau of Investigative Journalists, “Globally, we have also allocated doses to low and lower middle-income countries at a not-for-profit price, including an advance purchase agreement with Covax to provide up to 40 million doses in 2021. We are committed to supporting efforts aimed at providing developing countries with the same access to vaccines as the rest of the world.”
But the company declined to comment on the ongoing private negotiations.
EmpireDiaries.com had recently reported in a video story that the world’s richest countries are hoarding a huge number of Covid-19 vaccines. Canada, US, UK, EU, Japan and Australia are cornering one billion extra doses of vaccines, which is way more than the quantity they need to vaccinate their entire citizens.
In fact, while powerful nations pledged to help poorer countries with equitable distribution of Covid-19 vaccines, out of the first 200 million shots administered globally, as much as 45% has gone just to the G7 countries.
It is now clear that it’s not just the coronavirus, our bigger enemies are these ‘vaccine empires’. This combination of rich nations and powerful pharma companies are hoarding vaccines, and bullying weaker nations that are in desperate need of the life-saving vaccines.
The lesson from disturbing reports such as this one is that pharma giants like Pfizer are more than just corporates – they are our modern-day empires.
